grocery store gardening

there are all kinds of plants you can grow from the grocery store
it is a very easy and low priced way to get a garden going

here is turmeric I grew from the fresh turmeric I got in the store
the tick is to get it "organic"
this is because irradiation is not allowed if it is organic,
so it should grow,

here are what they look like at the store (imagine it without the dirt)
and this is ginger, but the turmeric looks almost the same
it might take them a few months to come up as they may have been growing in a place out of season with where you are. they grow up to be very neat plants that will get a few foot high,
you use the plant in cooking by taking ribosomes (kind of tuber ish roots) and peeling them,
then grating it small, then add that to what you are cooking (like rice)

potatoes work well from the store,
but might have bacteria and viruses that can make them not grow so well,
so you clean them up by taking a 6 inch long sprout from the potato and cutting off the last 4 inches,
you then toot that in water,
plant that out in your garden for small potatoes the first year,
save and plant the tiny potatoes the next year, and the second year you will get full size and production,
you can replant potatoes for 6 years (I am pretty sure it is 6 years) in a row before having to clean them up again.

winter squash is another good one
the seeds in them will grow new squash,
some times the plants are a hybrid and that is usually ok, they will not grow precisely like the original one,
but they will make squash you can eat, just save seeds from the ones you like to replant the next year.

sweet potatoes and yams are also easy (ish)
you get the tuber in the store,
and the plant will grow whatever it does not have,
so the tuber will grow vines,
and the vines will grow tubers,
so you plant the tuber and get vines from it,
you then cut off the vines and root them in water,
then plant in the garden,
the vines planted with no tubers will grow tubers
get it ?

garlic is an easy one
just take the garlic heads apart into smaller parts
and plant them in the ground,
here are the ones I planted in super early spring (should have been planted in the fall)

they will all grow there own garlic head

sometimes beans and other seeds will grow well from the store,
remember that organic are likely to be living sold as food, so it has a higher chance of growing.
get raw (like peanuts)
and plant a few and see what you get.
my fenugreek seeds just came up last nigh and were sold as food at an indian grocery store,
but the navy beans I planted 2 weeks ago did not come up (likely from irradiation or heat)
so it is kind of hit or miss, but you can get some very neat things just from what you are already getting at the store.

now time to go look at my fenugreek and peanuts from the store that are just sprouting
